Does Love Come With a Searchlight?
The Lord’s searchlight penetrates the human spirit, exposing every hidden motive. Proverbs 20:27 (NLT)
Serious love, the kind God offers, comes with serious tools (a penetrating searchlight and a hidden motive detector), along with an unquenchable objective of removing relational obstacles.
If we are to pursue God the way He pursues us, we must become interested in more than “the rules” and “the consequences.” We must become hungry for a no walls between us kind of relationship.
I’ve found I cannot see my blind spots. The same goes for hidden motives. A reality check is always beneficial, but mine seldom feel good or come at a time when I’m “at the top of my game.” Indeed, mine usually come when hidden motives and blind spots are edging me over the cliff. When I do settle down enough to truly listen and comprehend, I’m always grateful, but the in-between time is usually not pretty.
If you are not your own worst enemy—congratulations! However, the longer I circle the sun, the less I trust myself. Under the right circumstances I can talk myself into just about anything. At various times over the past month or so, I have been convinced that God cannot stand me, doesn’t understand or appreciate what I’m enduring, and will only communicate when I’ve made it to the next level by sheer force of will.
Thankfully, God doesn’t treat me the way I treat myself. I don’t want my hidden motives exposed, but God is willing to do whatever it takes to make our relationship stronger and more satisfying for both of us.
The next time your spirit feels God’s searchlight, and hidden motives are being exposed—take a deep breath, settle down, and simply say, “Thank you, God.”
